BUTCHERING LIVESTOCK AT HOME Garden Ways Editors
This a good, straight foreward pamphlet on how to kill, skin and cut up a variety of animals. I found it to be a useful guide eventhough I don't agree with some of the killing and skinning techniques used. I have over 20 years experience breeding and butchering rabbits and chinchillas. I can assure you that the techniques outlined in this publication are sound and practical. The reason I purchased this pamphlet was to gain some insight into to butchering of larger animals. I feel the author does an excelent job of giving a basic break down of the esentials. I do however, wish the author would have broken down the cuts more thouroughly and dedicated a section to deer. (John Fischer, Mazomanie, WI)

GREENER PASTURE ON YOUR SIDE OF THE FENCE: Better Farming With Voisin Management-Intensive Grazing by Bill Murphy
Bill Murphy's book saved our farm and changed our life! It made it possible for our son to come back home to the farm, which now that it is based on pasture will support two families, rather than going bankrupt as we were when we fed in confinement. (Henry Forgues, Vermont dairy farmer)
This book explains in detail why and how to use management intensive grazing, and what to expect from its use for most kinds of livestock. I provide many examples to illustrate fine points, including producing milk, beef, and lamb on pasture alone, nutrient cycling, grounding energizers, recovery periods, economics, and much more. I present everything that I learned during 17 years of using Voisin management on my own farm, and answer all questions that have been asked me during conferences and farm visits with farmers. This book shows a way to increase your farm's profitability and reduce its labor demand -- thereby improving your quality of life -- while properly and responsibly caring for the land and the plants and animals that live on it.
From the Author
I grew up on a farm, close to animals and the land. In all my studies at university I didn't learn anything more important or valuable than the farmer's perceptions, sensibilities, and common sense gained while living and working with my parents on the family farm. I wrote this book as if I was talking to one person, another farmer or someone who dreams of farming, so it reads easily and is easy to understand the concepts needed to manage pasture well. It's printed in large type to make reading easier after a long day. Do yourself a favor: read this book. If it doesn't make you money and save you work, send it back to the publisher for a full refund.

SMALL-SCALE LIVESTOCK FARMING: A Grass-Based Approach for Health, Sustainability, and Profit by Carol Ekarius
My name is Carol Ekarius, and together with my husband, Ken Woodard, I've raised and marketed livestock for over a decade. Neither Ken, nor I, came from farming backgrounds, but we learned how to succeed in agriculture.
My intention with this book is to help thinking people accomplish their goals with livestock. It's for those who've been farming or ranching for most of their lives, for those who are just starting out, and for those who are dreaming of someday being a farmer or rancher. It's for those who want to make their living off of livestock, and those who just want to raise a few critters.
This isn't a cookbook, with a simple recipe for success in agriculture, because there is no such thing. But it is a book that will help you design a system that works for you, and that is environmentally and socially friendly. The book is broken into four sections (an overview, an animal husbandry section, a marketing section, and a planning section) so it's easy to jump in where you need help.
But this book isn't just about my husband and I, and how we've farmed. I include stories and information about other farmers and ranchers from throughout the United States--highlighting the things that have allowed them to be successful. One of my favorite parts of writing this book, was doing the interviews. These are can-do,
will-do kind of folks, who haven't let hardships stop them from succeeding! I hope their stories inspire you. I know they inspired me. Good luck, and always pursue your dreams! (The author) |
