Roundabout Farm Seeks Apprentices

Roundabout Farm is a 76-acre farm in the foothills of of the Blue Ridge Mountains producing non-certified organic vegetables, herbs and flowers with approximately 20 acres of tillable land. We are entering our 3rd year of production in 2008. For ‘08, our markets include an 80 share vegetable CSA, a 20 person flower CSA, 2 farmers markets and wholesale and restaurant accounts. The farm cultivates about 10 acres of vegetable, flower and cover crops. In addition, we have two 100x26ft cold frames for production of greens, flowers and herbs in the winter and 1 heated 26x76 greenhouse for transplant, winter tomato and flower production. The farm uses a broad range of biological farming approaches such as extensive use of cover crops, raised beds, mulching and integrated pest management. We use machinery for most tillage and some cultivating operations and train apprentices in the use of this equipment. The farm is located minutes from Charlottesville, a vibrant college town with many outdoor and arts opportunities.

Three full season apprenticeships are available at the farm for the 2008 season. One position is currently available. This position is available immediately and ends in November (end date is flexible). Apprentices participate in all aspects of crop production, including planting, cultivating, harvesting, and selling. Practical training in crop and overall farm management, as well as training in tractor operation and maintenance is offered. Farm experience is preferred but not essential. Applicants must have a desire and ability to do outdoor, physical work in all kinds of weather and a sincere interest in farming. Work schedule is five and a half days a week with paid vacation available according to apprentice tenure. Compensation includes a camping platform, a communal living/cooking space, farm produce and a $500-$1000 monthly stipend based on experience. Apprentices are eligible for a year end bonus upon completion of the full season.
